What happens is that the locking points and keeps misalign making the door harder to open and close.

You say something has broken off from the locking mechanism it could have broken off from the gearbox this is in the centre of the locking strip.
During particularly cold or particularly hot months your upvc door may have contracted or expanded slightly causing it to not close properly.
Door lubrication is required.
